Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has launched 10 Motorcycle Response Units (MRUs) to bolster the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), aiming to navigate the city’s heavy traffic and deliver faster pre-hospital care to patients in hard-to-reach areas.

The initiative, commissioned on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, equips the ambulance motorcycles with critical medical tools, including defibrillators, oxygen tanks, nebulizers, glucometers, first aid kits, and two-way radios. Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser on Health, described the MRUs as a “game-changing innovation” that positions Lagos as a leader in healthcare delivery. “The Ambu-bikes are Lagos’ solution to traffic challenges. They’ll get to people quicker, stabilize patients, and save lives in record time,” she said.

Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, highlighted that the bikes are part of a five-year plan to overhaul emergency care, which includes mobile ICUs, boat ambulances, and future medical helicopters. LASAMBUS Director Beatrice Makinde emphasized the bikes’ ability to reach victims swiftly in crowded events, narrow streets, and off-road locations, marking a significant advancement in emergency response.

Lagos is now the first Nigerian state to deploy motorcycle ambulances, setting a benchmark for healthcare innovation across Africa. The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to improving response times and saving lives despite urban challenges.
